Is It Beneficial for Your Brain to Treat Heart Issues?

In comparison to those who just receive medication treatment for atrial fibrillation, people who undergo catheter ablation may experience a lower risk of dementia.

The American Academy of Neurology's 75th Annual Meeting, which will take place in Boston from April 22–27, 2023, will feature a presentation of the preliminary study that was released on April 18, 2023.

Catheter ablation employs radiofrequency to burn small patches of cardiac tissue that may be the source of the irregular heartbeat by inserting a tube into the heart.

Bahadar Srichawla, DO, of University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in Worcester and a member of the American Academy of Neurology, stated: "Previous studies have found that people with arrhythmias may have long-term thinking and memory problems due to how this condition may affect the blood flow to the brain."Our research demonstrates a relationship between catheter ablation therapy and a lower incidence of cognitive impairment.

The study's 887 participants had an average age of 75 at the outset. 193 members in this group underwent catheter ablation. At the beginning of the trial, after one year, and after two years, participants completed a memory and thinking exam. Short-term memory, attention, focus, and language were all tested in this exam. Scores could be between 0 and 30. A score of 23 or less was deemed to indicate cognitive impairment. The average score for those who underwent catheter ablation was 25, whereas the average score for those who did not undergo the operation was 23.
After controlling for conditions including atrial fibrillation risk score, sleep apnea, heart illness, and kidney disease, individuals who received catheter ablation had a 36% lower chance of cognitive impairment than those who did not have the surgery and were only given medication.

Although the results are promising, Srichawla continued, "Many factors are taken into account when catheter ablation is prescribed." "More study is required to confirm our findings,"
The limitation of study is blood flow to the brain is not recorded.
